The format

The Copa America has a two-phase format. A group stage and a final stage. The teams are divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. In each group each team plays 3 matches against all the teams in each group.

Each team is awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and none in case of defeat. At the end of the group phase, the top two teams from each group qualify for the final phase, which consists of quarter-finals, semi-final and final. The crossings in this final phase are made by drawing lots, taking into account that teams that have been in the same group cannot play each other in the quarter-finals.

All the details of the format and rules of the competition can be consulted in the official rules published on the official website of the Copa América.

  • Group C

And going into more detail, here are some information pills about each of the participants of this 2024 edition and their history in the competition:

Argentina

Argentina are the reigning champions after beating Brazil in the final of the 2021 edition. Together with Uruguay, they are the team that has won the Copa America the most times, a total of 15 times, and are one of the pioneers of the competition. The famous Albiceleste jersey has been worn by legends such as Messi, Maradona and Kempes. Argentina will be hoping to repeat their crown in the United States, although it will not be easy.

Mexico

Of the CONCACAF teams, Mexico has the most history and prestige. Although they have never won the tournament, they have managed to reach two finals in 1993 and 2001. This is their 13th Copa America appearance.

United States

United States: The hosts of the Copa America are also one of the newest teams to play in the tournament. Their first appearance was in 1993 and since then their biggest achievements have been two semi-finals in 1995 and 2016. The latter was the centenary edition of the Copa America and was also the first time the country hosted the competition.

Brazil

Brazil is undoubtedly one of the world's great teams. Winner of 5 World Cups, "la canarinha" is the third team with the most Copa América titles, with 9. Legends such as Pele, Ronaldo or Ronaldinho speak of their greatness and their demand to lift the Copa América again, which they have not won since 2019. This is their 38th participation.

Peru

The Peruvian national team is among the historic winners of the Copa America. They have won it twice. It was in 1939 when they lifted the title for the first time and it was not until 1975 when they managed to repeat the feat. Peru have now participated 33 times in the Copa América.

Ecuador

This is the 30th edition of the Copa América for the Ecuadorian national team. They have hosted the tournament on three occasions and their best result to date was the two 4th places they achieved in two of the editions they hosted in 1959 and 1993. To equal or surpass that 4th place is the objective of this edition.

Uruguay

If we talk about historic teams in the Copa América, Uruguay is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding. It has participated in the tournament more times than any other team with 45 appearances, and together with Argentina is the team that has won it the most times with 15. Uruguay has been present since the first edition in 1916, an edition that it also won, and its last cup was lifted in 2011.

Colombia

The "Cafeteros", as the Colombian national team is known, have already played in 23 editions of the Copa América and even won the tournament in 2001 in a tournament held in their own country. To repeat such a feat in 2024 is a tall order, but they are certainly a team to be reckoned with.

Chile

Chile. The United States brings back good memories for the Chileans. In 2016, in the centenary edition also held in the USA, they lifted their second Copa America title. The first was a year earlier, in 2015, coinciding those two years with their golden era led by historic players of the national team such as Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal.

Venezuela

The Venezuelan national team was the last one belonging to Conmebol to make its debut in the competition. It was in 1967 and since then they have participated in 19 editions. Their best result came in 2011 when they reached the semi-finals.

Panama

Panama The most novice in the competition. They have only played in one Copa América. It was in 2016 in the centenary edition and in their debut they were unable to get past the group stage. In this, their second participation, the objective is clear: to improve on the 2016 result.

Paraguay

Paraguay: One of the classic teams in every Copa América. Paraguay has played in the third most editions of the Copa, behind only Argentina and Uruguay. From its debut in 1921 to the present day, it has participated in 38 editions and has lifted the title in two of them, 1953 and 1979.

Jamaica

After Panama, Jamaica is the second-youngest in terms of Copa America appearances. This 2024 edition will be their third with a clear objective; to get their first win in the tournament, something they failed to achieve in their debut in 2015 and 2016. Getting past the group stage is an even more ambitious goal for the Jamaicans.

Bolivia

Bolivia are among the winners of at least one Copa America. They won it in 1963, playing at home on home soil. In 1997, they also reached the final, but this time they lost to Brazil and finished runners-up. In total, Bolivia has played in 28 Copa Americas up to the 2014 edition.

Canada

Canada is the only team making its debut in the competition and will do so in style, taking part in the opening match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on 20 June. The Canadian team has reached the Copa America 2024 by knocking out Trinidad and Tobago in a 2-0 win in the play-off in March.

Costa Rica

Los Ticos, as Costa Ricans and their national team are known, will be playing in the Copa America for the sixth time after last qualifying in the 2016 edition. Costa Rica's greatest achievement was reaching the quarter-finals, a milestone they have reached twice and will strive to equal or even surpass in this 2024 edition.
